Love this bit of dialogue (I honestly really like Miruz): “He is my lord and master, and that is his privilege. Say one more word to me before he arrives, and I’ll bury you in it first.”
Damn: "only thirty-three of the ninety-two black shields"
The funeral pyre scenes are epic and beautiful.
Love her: "Sivridi walked back up the hill with Uzani’s body over her shoulder."
Got me choked up here: "A few saluted her. One or two even knelt"
Damn right!: "I probably ought to stop calling you ‘Girl,’"
Hahaha! Sure, Metan: "It’s not like I can’t hold onto it."
Ooh, do I smell pheremones in the breeze?: "Kareva noticed for the first time"
True story: "It’ll fuel your rage,"
Bahaha, Miruz. I know I'm not technically supposed to, but I adore him.
Thank you, bestie. I love Miruz, too. I didn’t expect to, but about the time the inner monologue I assume you’re laughing about happens, he started to be one of my favorites.
Oh, this is not the kind of jeopardy I was looking for - this is going to get bloody but I have a grudging respect for Miroz for that climb and it is (weirdly) making me root a bit for the attackers...
They are all noble warriors and it doesn't feel right to pit them against each other!
The thing that bothers me most about a lot of the fantasy I have read is the idea of the heroes battling a bunch of nameless, faceless, mindless “bad guys.” This is old hat now, obviously, with Ice and Fire and other series changing the game, but when I was growing up, my favorite novels weren’t fantasy—I vibed with Mario Puzo more. The original Godfather novel is a stunning piece of work. The remake of Shōgun that came out on Hulu this year feels more relevant to me than most fantasy. How do you dance through the craziest rules and seize power? The HBO series Deadwood is the most important thing I ever consumed. Basically, I’m writing about killers first, I guess, and what they care about and want to accomplish has to be interesting enough to not make the story feel like, say, a bunch of orcs hammering at another bunch of orcs. And again, some of this may be a real hot take…but there are characters in both camps that I fucking love. Miruz was SO fun to write.
Baahhhhh basically a literal cliff hanger! But SHEESH this is good. Kareva is insane. Miruz is a champ. Sivridi is a beast. Loving this and now I’m sad I have to wait haha

I really didn’t want it to feel one-sided.

Love and thanks, too, as always.
